I feel like re-enforcing the importance of National Serivce.
I feel like re-enforcing the importance of serving National Service today. :) happy reading! again.
Should women do National Service? (extended version)
..."Our country's declinging birth rate and aging population is signalling to us that defending our country is not only essential to men, but to women too. I personally feel that women should be required to do National Service as well.
The principle of equal treatment should apply in all areas. If young men are asked to givetwo to three years of thier lives to the nation, so should women. The concept of National Service should be broadened. If women, as well as men, are drafted for National Service, both sexes can then serve the nation in many ways. Measues should also be taken to eliminate sexual stereotyping and any possibility of sexual harressment while young Singaporeans, whether men or women, serve their National Service.
Most Asian parents may argue that they do not want their daughters to go through the tough training of NS. They usually think that girls are more vulnerable than guys and want to protect them from any possilbe dangers. Asian parents should change their mindset as times are changing now. Women are becoming more independant and should be given the equal opportunity and honour to serve their country as well.
Finally, our country's defence is at risk if we do not have enough 'youngsters' in the army, air force and navy. With the terrorism on the rise, Singapore has become more vulnerable. Women serving National Service would strengthen our defence force. I believe that a person's gender does not have an effect on their ability to serve the country. Therefore, women too, can play a part in ensuring our country's safetty and defence for all."
